Children's Concert

"Rock-n-Roll Fantasy" by The Brian Waite Band.  Come sing, dance, and laugh with the award-winning trio that has rocked its was into the hearts of both kids and parents.  In this program, hilarious antics and fun abound when the band mixes music and imagination to create groovin' adventures and interactive melodies. For ages 4 - 10.


Route 66: The Mother Road in Santa Monica
Wednesday, February 8 from

In celebration of its 80th anniversary, historian Scott Piotrowski discusses and presents slides on Route 66 and its place in Santa Monica history.  Copies of his book, Finding the End of the Mother Road: Route 66 in Los Angeles County, are available for purchase following the program.

Sustainable Communities through Sustainable Living: Green Building Saturday, February 11 from 2 to 3:30 p.m.  (MLK Auditorium)

Inspired by the environmentally-friendly design and features of the new Main Library and community interest in sustainable issues, this four-part, bi-monthly series begins with local architects and experts on sustainability discussing materials and techniques for green building and remodeling.  Moderator Monica Gilchrist will lead the discussion between architects David Hertz and Gwynne Pugh, and local solar expert Paul Scott.


The World War I Years: America Becomes a World Power

Professor Lynn Dumenil (Occidental College) presents films highlighting the events of World War I and its lasting effects on America. This program has been made possible through a grant from the American Library Association and National Video Resources.

10:30 and 11:30 a.m. Technology Scavenger Hunt  (Children's Activity Room)  
How well can you find your way in the fierce jungle of information?  We challenge you to a technology scavenger hunt with prizes for those who complete it well. Ages 8 and up. 

11:15 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Introduction and Tour of Computer Training Room
Staff will welcome you to the new Computer Training Room and talk about the upcoming schedule of computer classes for the public. 

11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Book Group Resource (Computer Training Room)
Examine the library’s online resources for literature and readers’ advisory tools through for bibliophiles with the Literature Resource Center, Novelist and Magill OnLiterature Plus. Explore the literary possibilities in the Oxford Reference Collection, What Do I Read Next and InfoTrac OneFile. Learn to find literary criticism, author biographies and locate support material for booktalks.

1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Learn More about Live Homework Help (Children's Activity Room)  
Students who have a question about an algebra equation or formulating a thesis statement can connect to a tutor who can walk them through finding the solution to their problem.  These tutors are available free through Live Homework Help, accessible through the Santa Monica Public Library. For ages 10 and up. Co-sponsored by Tutor.com.

1:30 to 3:00 p.m. FC Search (Computer Training Room)
The FC Search database is a directory of grantmakers and recently awarded grants for the nonprofit sector published by the Foundation Center, a national organization that provides education and training about the grantseeking process, philanthropy and foundations in the U.S. As one of the Foundation Center’s official Cooperating Collections, the Library provides FC Search on CD-ROM at all public access computers. This class will demonstrate how to use FC Search to identify and research potential sources of funding for nonprofits.

2 p.m. Game Programming (Multipurpose Room) 

Maneesh Sethi, a Stanford University freshman and the author of Game Programming for Teens, teaches a class to teens interested in programming their own games.

3:15 to 4:00 p.m. AFI Catalog (Computer Training Room)
A premier resource for American films produced in collaboration with the American Film Institute, the Catalog provides in-depth profiles of 47,500 films produced from 1893-1970. It also includes information on the top ten films selected by the AFI for the last four years. The AFI Catalog is available in-house at the of the Library e-source stations. The class will demonstrate how to locate plot summaries, credits, critical analyses and bibliographies on your favorite films and will also include reference to other film online and print sources.

3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Homework Resources Parents Should Know About (Children's Activity Room)
Learn more about the many resource available to help you help your child with homework in this program designed for parents, grandparents, caregivers, teachers, and other adults working with children.


Stars of the Sea
Wednesday, February 22
from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. (Children's Activity Room)

Greet creatures from the Santa Monica Bay, like sea stars, sea cucumbers, purple sea urchins and marine snails during a special visit from Heal the Bay's Santa Monica Pier Aquarium with its traveling touch tanks, followed by games and related activities.  Ages 4 and up. Co-sponsored by Heal the Bay.
