Spotlight on Architecture: The New Main Library
Monday, January 9 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. MLK Jr.
Auditorium
Concepts like “the living room of the city” and
paseo inform the new library’s architecture.
John Ruble, Partner-in-Charge at Moore Ruble
Yudell Architects & Planners – recipient of the
2006 Architecture Firm Award from the American
Institute of Architects – talks about the
principles that guided his design of the Main
Library. Dr. Kenneth Breisch, Director of
Historic Preservation Programs at the USC School
of Architecture, describes the new Main
Library’s place in the transformation of the
American public library.
California Classic Books with David Ulin
Wednesday, January 11 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. MLK Jr.
Auditorium.
A discussion with Los Angeles Times Book Review
editor David Ulin launches a new California
Classics Book Group. The Group will discuss
California literature from its earliest origins,
through Los Angeles noir, and up to the present
day. Beginning in February, the Group will meet
at 1:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each
month. The selection for February 14th is
Carolyn See's The Handyman.

Dedication of the Martin
Luther King Jr. Auditorium

Celebrate the dedication of the new Main
Library’s Auditorium as part of the Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr. Day 2006. Please note: The Main
Library will be open only for docent and guided
tours at 12:30, 1:00, and 1:30 p.m.
Between Two Worlds: Jewish
Diaspora Stories
Tuesday, January 17 from 7 to 8:45 p.m.
Multipurpose Room
Explore the Jewish Diaspora through literature
with a presentation by local scholar Barbara
Bilson. This event launches an engaging
five-part book discussion series from February
to June that will meet the third Tuesday of each
month from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and includes books
from renowned authors Saul Bellow and Allegra
Goodman. This program has been made possible
through a grant from Nextbook and the American
Library Association.
A Tribute to Raymond Carver
Thursday, January 19 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. MLK

An evening of spoken word celebrating the poetry
and prose of the late, great writer of the
Pacific Northwest. Produced by Susan Hayden, and
featuring an ensemble cast of Andrew Allport,
John Waldman, S.A. Griffin, Chris Allport,
Laurel Ann Bogen, Beth Ruscio, Doug Knott,
Philomene Long Thomas, Scott Wannberg, Shawna
Casey, Jack Kehler, Michelle Little, Leon

The History of Humankind
through the Eyes of Stanton Macdonald-Wright: The
Library Mural Series
Saturday, January 28 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. MLK
Auditorium.
A pioneer of Modernism, Macdonald-Wright created
one of the largest and most vibrant murals
completed during the 1930s New Deal at the Santa
Monica Public Library. After 40 years, the mural
series (on loan from the Smithsonian American
Art Museum) has returned to the new Main
Library. Dr. Ilene Susan Fort, Mural Consultant
and Curator of American Art at the Los Angeles
County Museum of Art, describes the murals,
followed by an opportunity to view the murals
installed on the second floor of the new Main
Library, 601 Santa Monica Blvd.

working with children.

The World War I Years: America Becomes a World Power
Sunday, January 29 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Multipurpose
Room
Professor Lynn Dumenil (Occidental College)
presents films highlighting the events of World
War I and its lasting effects on the United
States. Parts two and three of the series are
presented on February 12th and 26th. This
program is supported through a grant from the
American Library Association and National Video
Resources.
