Local Santa Monica poets Jeanette Clough, francEyE, and John Harris exhibit the power and resonance of poetry in a lively panel discussion led by Paul Lieber, host of KPFK’s “Why Poetry?” show.


Spotlight on Architecture: The New Main Library
Monday, January 9 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. MLK Jr. Auditorium

Concepts like “the living room of the city” and paseo inform the new library’s architecture. John Ruble, Partner-in-Charge at Moore Ruble Yudell Architects & Planners – recipient of the 2006 Architecture Firm Award from the American Institute of Architects – talks about the principles that guided his design of the Main Library. Dr. Kenneth Breisch, Director of Historic Preservation Programs at the USC School of Architecture, describes the new Main Library’s place in the transformation of the American public library.


California Classic Books with David Ulin
Wednesday, January 11 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. MLK Jr. Auditorium.

A discussion with Los Angeles Times Book Review editor David Ulin launches a new California Classics Book Group.  The Group will discuss California literature from its earliest origins, through Los Angeles noir, and up to the present day.  Beginning in February, the Group will meet at 1:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month.  The selection for February 14th is Carolyn See's The Handyman.

This ensemble’s eclectic repertoire and interactive performance style combine to showcase the flutes remarkable qualities.

 3:00 - 4:00 p.m. The Hour Trio

This modern jazz trio of young Santa Monicans has been hailed by the Los Angeles times as "teenage jazz phenoms."


Dedication of the Martin Luther King Jr. Auditorium

Celebrate the dedication of the new Main Library’s Auditorium as part of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2006. Please note: The Main Library will be open only for docent and guided tours at 12:30, 1:00, and 1:30 p.m.


Between Two Worlds: Jewish Diaspora Stories
Tuesday, January 17 from 7 to 8:45 p.m.  Multipurpose Room

Explore the Jewish Diaspora through literature with a presentation by local scholar Barbara Bilson.  This event launches an engaging five-part book discussion series from February to June that will meet the third Tuesday of each month from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and includes books from renowned authors Saul Bellow and Allegra Goodman. This program has been made possible through a grant from Nextbook and the American Library Association.


A Tribute to Raymond Carver
Thursday, January 19 from 7:30 to 9 p.m.  MLK Auditorium

An evening of spoken word celebrating the poetry and prose of the late, great writer of the Pacific Northwest. Produced by Susan Hayden, and featuring an ensemble cast of Andrew Allport, John Waldman, S.A. Griffin, Chris Allport, Laurel Ann Bogen, Beth Ruscio, Doug Knott, Philomene Long Thomas, Scott Wannberg, Shawna Casey, Jack Kehler, Michelle Little, Leon Martell, and Michael C Ford.


Junie B. Jones

Actors from the Morgan-Wixson Theatre perform scenes based on the popular children’s series about Junie B. Jones and her experiences at school and home. For ages 5 & up.


Californians in Crime: The Great California Mystery Tradition
Wednesday, January 25 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.  MLK Auditorium

Attention, mystery buffs!  Meet local mystery authors Denise Hamilton, Rochelle Krich, and Paula Woods.  Book-signing to follow.  This program kicks off a new Mystery Book Group at the Main Library that will meet the fourth Wednesday of every month from 7 to 8:30 p.m.  This event is supported by Poets & Writers, Inc. through a grant it has received from The James Irvine Foundation.

The following program has been cancelled and will be re-scheduled:    The History of Humankind through the Eyes of Stanton Macdonald-Wright: The Library Mural Series
Saturday, January 28 from 2 to 3:30 p.m.  MLK Auditorium.

A pioneer of Modernism, Macdonald-Wright created one of the largest and most vibrant murals completed during the 1930s New Deal at the Santa Monica Public Library. After 40 years, the mural series (on loan from the Smithsonian American Art Museum) has returned to the new Main Library. Dr. Ilene Susan Fort, Mural Consultant and Curator of American Art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, describes the murals, followed by an opportunity to view the murals installed on the second floor of the new Main Library, 601 Santa Monica Blvd.


Wave of Tales Storytelling Festival with Special Guest, Henry Winkler

Enjoy tales of wonder, noise and magic with the author and storyteller, and then create butterflies. For ages 3 & up.

noon - 1:00p.m. Henry Winkler presents the “Hank Zipzer” series (MLK Auditorium)

Actor Henry Winkler reads from his series of books that he has co-written the “Hank Zipzer” series about a 4th grade boy with dyslexia. For ages 9 to 12 and parents.

1:30 - 2:30p.m. Storytelling Workshop for Parents with Kathleen Zundell (Children’s Activity Room)

Once upon a time, a storyteller traveled far and wide to help others gather golden moments, remember precious memories, and craft unique family tales to share. Zundell’s workshop is designed for parents, grandparents, caregivers, teachers and other adults working with children.

3:00 - 5:00 p.m. Storytelling Concerts (Children’s Activity Room)

Join us for fiery folktales with storyteller and actress Ellaraino; brain stretching tall tales with storyteller and actor Stephen Henniger; poignant personal tales with storyteller Barbara Clark; and a few outright lies by Santa Monica Public librarian and storyteller Donnae. All ages welcome.


The World War I Years: America Becomes a World Power
Sunday, January 29 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Multipurpose Room

Professor Lynn Dumenil (Occidental College) presents films highlighting the events of World War I and its lasting effects on the United States.   Parts two and three of the series are presented on February 12th and 26th.  This program is supported through a grant from the American Library Association and National Video Resources.
