  Friends of the Santa Monica Public Library

The Friends is a dynamic organization supporting the Library through fundraising and volunteer activities.  Its purpose is to increase public interest in the Library by focusing attention on its facilities, services and needs; to encourage gifts, endowments and bequests for the enrichment of the Library’s collections; and in other ways to contribute to the cultural life of Santa Monica.

September 2010 Friends Book Store News

The Friends of the Santa Monica Library Book Store offers a special September Sale: All non-fiction books are 50% off on Fridays and Saturdays only, throughout the month of September.

Yes, this includes science, health, cookbooks, religion, parenting, biographies, history, crafts, gardening, sports, reference, art, travel, politics, law, technology, and we’ll throw in poetry, plays, and more.

No, it does not include novels, mysteries, science fiction, fantasy, short stories, or westerns.(This sale excludes specially marked higher value books.)


New items arrive by the dozens almost every day, so drop by soon. Check out the Perennial Place blue cart for monthly-themed books. Bookstore hours are Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday from 11-4:30, Sunday 1:30-4:30, closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Location is on the left as you enter through the north entrance of the Main Library at 601 Santa Monica Boulevard.


Don’t forget to donate the books you have finished. You can take them to the Customer Assistance desk in the Main Library lobby, where they will be glad to give you a receipt.

  • Movie site licenses so the library can offer film screenings

  • Digital work on photographic collection of old Outlook and Pacific Palisades photos

  • Furniture for branch libraries

  • Support for reading collections for teens

What do Friends Give?

  • Equipment and materials not available otherwise, e.g. reading aids for the visually disabled.
  • Funds for special services such as the "Shutin Service," which brings the Library to those unable to leave home.
  • Used book sales, the major fund-raising activity.
  • Recognition of Library volunteers.
