Minutes of the SPECIAL Meeting of April 3, 2008

A SPECIAL meeting of the Library Board was called to order by Chairperson, Edward Edwards, at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, April 3, 2008 at the Community Meeting Room, Fairview Branch Library, 2101 Ocean Park Blvd., Santa Monica.

Boardmember Blackwell, Boardmember Breisch, Chairperson Edwards, Boardmember Oppenheim and Vice Chair Stern

Boardmember Oppenheim made a correction to the March 6, 2008 minutes. The Board asked City Librarian, Greg Mullen, to respond to Holly Hofmann regarding her questions about the Friends of the Library Bookstore. The minutes stated the Board was going to respond. Boardmember Oppenheim made a motion to approve the minutes of the Library Board meeting of March 6, 2008 as corrected.  Boardmember Breisch seconded the motion.  The minutes were approved in a unanimous voice vote.

Greg Mullen, City Librarian, gave a report on the Friends of the Library activities to the Board. The Bookstore volunteers held a meeting to discuss issues that have arisen in the Bookstore and to plan for the next year. The Friends reminded us all to recruit used books for the Bookstore. The Friends had a booth at the Chamber of Commerce Non-profit Festival on the Promenade and plan to have booths at Culturejam and the Santa Monica Festival.

The Board toured the Fairview Branch Library. Mr. Mullen pointed out the new furniture and end panels in the Children’s area; new lounge furniture and lighting in the magazine area; the new canopy over the patio and new patio furniture; the newly installed self check out station; the self service area for holds; and a battery recycling bin for the public.

Mr. Mullen explained that the Board approved the language in the Policy and Procedure on Suspending Borrowing or Library Use Privileges as two different documents. However, staff merged the documents because of their similarities and removed redundancies.

The Board discussed several library journal articles.

 

Nationwide Current Library Trends - Review of Library Journal Articles

Staff distributed the February 2008 Library monthly statistics. Board discussion followed. The Board requested that on a quarterly basis they be updated on the statistics for each of the different types of materials that are borrowed.

 

Secretary’s Report

Due to the recent rain staff discovered that there was a leak around the awing in the museum space. The problem has been resolved.

 

Report on the Santa Monica Historical Society Museum

Mr. Mullen updated the Board on Citywide Reads. The average visit to the blog www.santamonicacitywidereads.blogspot.com created for Citywide Reads is four minutes. The bookcrossing.com books have been distributed at various locations in Santa Monica and are being picked up. Staff has distributed books at two Farmer’s Markets. Staff created a public service announcement for City TV informing the community about Citywide Reads. Media advertising has been placed in the Daily Press, www.surfsantamonica.com and the Santa Monica Mirror.

Chair Edwards collaborated with City TV to create the video for the Board and Commission Dinner. This year’s video focused on the Branch Libraries in particular the Fairview Branch Library.

Youth Services Librarians, Ann Wagner and Ilene Cohn attended the Public Library Association Conference where they gave a presentation on musical storytimes. They will make a presentation to the Board at the May meeting.

Library staff purchased two new digital microfilm readers for the Periodicals Department at the Main Library.

The preliminary grant proposal Wright Rix, Principal Librarian for Reference Services submitted to the State Library to digitize a portion of the Santa Monica Evening Outlook Newspaper was approved. Mr. Rix is now at work on the extended grant proposal.

The Library Board asked that the following items be included in next Library Board agenda:  Disabilities Commission presentation; Musical Storytime presentation and a report on National Library week and Culturejam.

Boardmember Oppenheim moved to adjourn the meeting.  Boardmember Breisch seconded the motion.  The motion was approved in a unanimous voice vote.  The meeting was adjourned at 7:50 pm.
