National Book Awards  Given in four genres: fiction, nonfiction, poetry and young people's literature; announced in October.
Man Booker Prize (British Fiction) Best novel by a citizen of the Commonwealth or the Republic of Ireland; announced in October.
Los Angeles Times Book Prizes Nine categories including biography, current interest, fiction, first fiction, history, mystery/thriller, poetry, science and technology, and young adult fiction; announced in April.
Nobel Prize in Literature Given to a writer who produced the most outstanding work in an ideal direction; announced by November.
Pulitzer Prizes for Fiction Distinguished fiction by an American author, preferably dealing with American life; announced during spring.
American Library Awards Numerous awards given by the American Library Association, including Notable Books for Adults, the Newbery Medal, and Outstanding Books for the College Bound.
United States Poet Laureate  Seeks to raise the national consciousness to a greater appreciation of the reading and writing of poetry; appointed in the summer.
Edgar Allen Poe (Mystery)  One of several awards given by the Mystery Writers of America, including the Edgar Allen Poe Awards.
Spur Awards (Western) Western Writers of America gives this award for distinguished writing about the American West day.
Nebula Awards (Science Fiction) Given by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America.
Hugo Awards (Science Fiction) Also known as the Science Fiction Achievement Award, it is given by the World Science Fiction Society, determined by a popular vote by its members.
RITAs (Romance) Highest award of excellence in the romance genre, given by the Romance Writers of America, awarded in July.
Lambda Literary Awards (Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual/Transgender) Judges determine the best in lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender literature.
James Beard Cookbook Awards Recognizes culinary professionals for excellence and achievement in their field, given by the James Beard Foundation; awarded in the spring.
