Library online database.  The  authoritative dictionary of the English language.  Excellent source for word derivations.
World Book Encyclopedia
Library online database.  Clear, concise, and current.  One of the best general encyclopedias.
Merriam-Webster Unabridged Dictionary
Library online  database.  Includes a thesaurus for synonyms and antonyms.
Access Science
Library online database.  This is the online version of the popular McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science and Technology.   For students and adults.
Oxford Reference Collection
Library online database. Dozens of specialized dictionaries in a variety of fields. 
Encyclopedia of Television
Programs and people, historic moments and trends, issues (e.g. violence, tabloid television), histories of major television networks, etc.
Webopaedia
Computer and technology related words, clearly and simply defined.  Site also includes latest technology news, vendor links, etc.
Facts on File
Library online database.  Not really an encyclopedia but a compilation of news events from 1940 to the present.  Includes historic documents, newsmaker profiles, and a "What happened on that day" feature.
Acronym Finder
Find out what those initials stand for.  This useful work also includes abbreviations.
Encyclopedia.com
Selection of articles from the 2001 edition of the Columbia Encyclopedia. Concise, readable articles.  Easy to use.
AskOxford's Classic Errors
Information on common grammatical errors and correct English usage.
Wikipedia
Free, open content encyclopedia worth consulting.  No editorial oversight so quality of articles may vary.
Gale Virtual Reference Library
Library online database.  Includes:  Countries & Their Cultures; Gale Encyclopedia of Multicultural America; Gale Encyclopedia of Everyday Law; Encyclopedia of Irish History; Pollution A To Z; Worldmark Encyclopedia of the Nations; Information Plus (current issues series); and Worldmark Encyclopedia of the States.  All these resources, except Everyday Law, provide graphics as well as full text.
Reader's Companion to History
Houghton Mifflin Publishing's College Division has put online the text of several of its Reader's Companion series.  The site includes Reader's Companions to American History, Women's History, and Military History as well as Encyclopedia of North American Indians; Great American History Fact-Finder; Civil War Battlefield Guide; and Ships of the World.  Use the link to "Resource Centers" for additional resources on world history, U.S. history, and western civilization.
Encyclopedia Mythica
Articles on mythology, folklore, bestiary, and heroes.  Genealogical tables for Celtic, Greek, Egyptian, Japanese, Norse, and Roman mythology.
 
The Library Reference Collection provides current editions of general and specialized dictionaries and encyclopedias.  Use the Subject search English Language Dictionaries to locate dictionaries by various publishers.  The Library also has a large collection of world language dictionaries.  To locate bilingual world language dictionaries use Subject searches like English Language Dictionaries French or English Language Dictionaries Chinese.  To locate world language dictionaries in the single language use Subject searches like " Spanish Language Dictionaries."

Specialized dictionaries in the Library Reference cover a wide variety of subjects.  To locate a dictionary on the subject you need try using the Subject search for the name of the subject plus the word "dictionary."  For example:  " Art Dictionaries" or " Economics Dictionaries" or " Botany Dictionaries."

Encyclopedias in the Reference Collection includes standard general encyclopedias like World Book, Encyclopedia Americana, and New Encyclopaedia BritannicaThe Library collection also includes many specialized encyclopedias such as Encyclopedia of Religion, Encyclopedia of Education, Encyclopedia of American History, or Astronomy Encyclopedia.  To locate a specialized encyclopedia in iBistro, use the name of the subject plus the word "encyclopedia" as your Subject search.  For example:  " Science Encyclopedias" or " Labor Encyclopedias" or " Music Encyclopedias."
