Atlapedia
Full color physical and political maps as well as key facts and statistics on countries of the world.
University of Texas Map Library
Maps of the world including historical maps.  Also includes maps of current events such as weather, civil unrest or fighting, political campaigns.
U.S. Census Bureau Online Mapping Service
Applications derived from Census Bureau's American FactFinder, State & County QuickFacts, and TIGER Map Server. Create your own map from selected data.
Map Quest 
One of the best known online map products.  Find maps for addresses, cities, businesses, airports.  Driving directions also available.
How Far Is It?
Provided by an Indonesian travel and technology company, How Far Is It? calculates the distance between two places anywhere in the world.
Places Online
Access to excellent place-based Websites.  Places range from Ballona Wetlands to antique maps of Iceland to a clickable photographic map of the Czech Republic.  Great Website for browsing.
Thesaurus of Geographic Names
Getty Research Center database.  Enter a geographic name or part of a name to locate a place.  Information includes longitude, latitude, and often a descriptive sentence about the place.
U.S. Gazetteer
U.S. Census database.  Data for place names includes population (1990 census), longitude and latitude, zip codes, and link to TIGER map of the area.
Oxford Reference Online:  Maps & Illustrations
Library online database.  Search for maps and flags of the countries of the world.  Maps include physical, political, and locator.  Maps and flags are in color and, although the maps are not very detailed, they are large enough to be printed out and used in reports.  A real plus are the illustrations on topics like acid rain, architectural styles, or weather satellites.
To locate maps and gazetteer in the Library collection use iBistro, the Library online catalog.  Use Subject searches such as:  " Gazetteers," " Atlases," " Roads Maps," or " Historical Geography."  Ask the librarian to assist you in locating maps and geographical information on your particular topic.

The Library's collection of California topographical maps is currently in storage during the construction of the new Main Library.

National Atlas of the U.S.
The National Atlas provides reference and outline maps of the United States to print or use online. Reference maps display general reference features such as boundaries, cities, capitals, major highways, rivers and lakes, and terrain. Outline maps show county and state boundaries, capitals, or other basic features. Maps without labels are included for students and teachers of American geography. The maps are in color, but also print or copy well in black and white.
Earth Resources Systems
Pick the state and then the city.  Check the sidebar menu for available features including Travel Distances between cities.  Other information includes demographics, local airports, weather, and local media.  A useful site.
