Election Information

Santa Monica City Clerk
Information on current elections and archives on past elections.  Campaign disclosure statements, election laws, and lists of elected officials.
Los Angeles County Registrar/Recorder
Register to vote, find your district and polling place, request an absentee ballot, and much more. Voter services are available in English, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, Tagalog, and Vietnamese.
 
California Secretary of State Elections Division
Voter Information Guides, campaign finance reports, and a variety of other materials for state level ballot items are available here.

MyVoteCounts.org is a new online project by the Secretary of State's office which makes access to their materials even more convenient.  Includes information on past elections.
 

Federal Election Commission
The Federal Election Commission (FEC) is the independent regulatory agency charged with administering and enforcing the federal campaign finance laws. Their site is the definitive source for campaign finance information and for the federal election results.
 

On the Issues

Project Vote Smart
A nonpartisan group that tracks the positions, finances, and voting records of candidates. Enter your Zip Code for a list of your elected officials and links to their biographies and records.
 
SmartVoter
League of Women Voters educational site with information on current and past elections, how to register to vote, and a link that allows the user to find his/her personal ballot with candidates and measures by entering an address and zip code.
Rock the Vote
Nonpartisan, nonprofit groupthat encourages young people (and older people who still rock) to be politically active.
California Voter Foundation
Independent nonprofit organization that aims to develop online and offline forums that promote public awareness about policy issues where democracy and technology intersect, such as voting technology, Internet voting, voter information and privacy, online voter education, and Internet disclosure of money in politics."

 
C-SPAN
Website has extensive current and historical streaming video on elections.  The 2004 Vote section provides current news, convention coverage, party press releases, and campaign ads, and a campaign finance database.
Roll Call
Sponsored by Congress.org, a private nonpartisan organization aimed at facilitating civic participation, Roll Call enables users to learn about candidates running for office,  follow legislative actions, locate and contact their representatives and more.
 

Elections History

Vote: the Machinery of Democracy
Online version of an exhibit  at the Smithsonian's Museum of American History on the history of voting methods in the United States, which are as varied as the individual states and their local election districts.
 
Library of Congress American Memory Project has online collections of photographs and documents from the women's suffrage movement.  American Memory also has a feature on the history of Presidential Elections and the Electoral College.
Presidential Election Maps 1860-1996
From the University of Virginia Library, maps of popular vote and Electoral College vote by state from. A more detailed map of the 2000 presidential election, based on different data, is available at 2000 Presidential Election Resources. A map of the 2004 Presidential Election is available from Princeton University

 

 
University of California election information databases include UC Berkeley's Hastings College of Law database of ballot initiatives from 1912 to the present and one for propositions from 1911 and UCLA's Online Campaign Literature Archive that collects literature and Websites for elections in the Los Angeles area (including Santa Monica).  The Online Archive currently includes all elections from 1908 to 1939, and some materials from 1940 to 2008.
For historical information on elections the Library Reference Collection includes books like America Votes: a Handbook of Contemporary American Election Statistics or America at the Polls 1960-1996.  Also useful are The Almanac of American Politics : the Senators, the Representatives, the Governors--Their Records, States, and Districts and CQ's Politics in America.  For other books on elections search iBistro, the Library online catalog, using the subject searches such as " Elections," Elections California," " Elections History," or " Elections Fiction."
