Books

The Library maintains an excellent collection of government directories, election information, and books on politics and government. 
Directories of government departments, agencies, and officials include Europa and World Factbook (international governments and the United Nations); Almanac of American Politics, CQ's Politics in America, Federal Yellow Book, Congressional Yellow Book Washington Information Directory, United States Government Manual, and Congressional Directory (federal government);  California Journal Roster and Government Guide and State Yellow Book (state government); and  Municipal Yellow Book and Municipal Directory (local  government).  The Main Library also keeps copies of the current budgets for the U.S., California, and Santa Monica.  All of these resources are in the Library Reference Collection.

Books on politics, issues, and political personalities include:    CQ Congressional Weekly; CQ's Politics in America; America Votes; Opposing Viewpoints; Who's Who in American Politics, CQ Researcher, and CQ Guide to Current American Government in the Reference Collection.  To locate books in the circulating collection use the Library online catalog, iBistro, and search keywords such as: "politics," "political," "elections," "government," "politicians," "politics and government."

Periodicals

The Library has a large selection of periodicals, both general and specialized, that provide information on international, national, state, and local issues. 

General information resources on politics and government include:  Los  Angeles Times, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Sentinel, Washington Post (available online in the Library online database Newsbank), L.A. Weekly, Santa Monica Mirror, Santa Monica Daily Press (newspapers) and Time, Newsweek, U.S. News & World Report (magazines).

Periodicals more focused on politics and government include:  National Review, Nation, New Republic, Foreign Affairs, Americas, and U.N. ChronicleLocate all periodicals by title in the Library online catalog, iBistro using the Periodical Search.

Library Online Databases

Opposing Viewpoints
Articles, overviews, primary documents and links to resources on hot button social and political issues.
Facts on File
 Digest of news, politics, events, and public figures from 1940 to the present.
InfoTrac OneFile
Full text and/or citations to the contents of more than 1,000 general interest magazines and specialized journals.
Los Angeles Times
Full text of the Times from 1985 to the present.  The database also includes full text of:  Christian Science Monitor, Orange County Register, San Diego Union-Tribune, San Francisco Chronicle, USA Today, and Washington Post.
Santa Monica Index
Citations to local Santa Monica newspapers and to other information about Santa Monica.  Suggested keyword searches include:  "elections," "politics," "government," "city council."
Rand Statistics
