Search Systems Free Public Records
Directory Free searchable public records databases arranged by
topic or by state. State are subdivided by county, region, or city.
Locate a variety of records: property sales; licensed contractors; limited
liability companies; assessors lists, unclaimed property, probate, sex
offenders, etc. Records available depend on what each jurisdiction makes
available on the Web. Some fee-based databases are included but these are
clearly identified. |
California Death
Records Part of RootsWeb.com. Search California death
records from 1940 through 1997. If you are not interested in any "for
fee" information or information requiring you to register with the site,
limit your search to the death records only. RootsWeb is a good site
for genealogists registration is required to use most of the site.
VitalSearch California death records provide searching of record from
1940 through 2000. Again, be aware that like RootsWeb, VitalSearch
does sell "premium" information for a fee but you may use the death record
search free. |
Social
Security Death Index Search by name only, by social security
number, or by a combination of data. The database contains information
provided by the Social Security Administration through the end of July 2004.
Sponsored by Ancestry.com, the site is much like RootsWeb so using any of
the other advertised information may call for registration or a fee.

Public Records Online
Directory Public Records Online Directory links to official
state web sites, and Tax Assessors' and Recorders' offices that have public
records available over the internet. If the county or parish has no data
online but hasa Website the Website is linked. If neither is available
a phone number has been provided. |
National Archives Records Administration (NARA) Military Records Requests
NARA manages all Federal records and the National Personnel Records Center
in St. Louis, MO, handles military personnel records. Veterans or
next-of-kin of deceased veterans can use
vetrecs.archives.gov to request records. Others may request
records using Standard Form SF-180, available in .pdf format on the Website.

Freedom of Information Act
This Department of Justice Website describes how to make an FOIA request,
gives the FOIA contact for various government departments and agencies, and
provides a Reference Guide that helps you determine if the needed
information is covered by FOIA and how to go about requesting it. The
Website also has links to publications, documents, and reading rooms with
public information. |

and other countries where birth, marriage, and death records may be obtained
