Small Business Loans Government Benefits
   

In addition to seeking grants, individuals should investigate other types of assistance such as small business loans, government benefits programs, student fellowships, scholarships and loans.

Foundation & Government Grants

“As an affiliate of the Foundation Center, the Santa Monica Public Library maintains a core collection of directories of grants and foundations and provides access to Foundation Grants to Individuals Online, the Foundation Center electronic grantseekers’ database.  Foundation Grants to Individuals Online is available only in the Main Library and librarians are happy to assist clients with its use. 

Current editions of the grants, foundations and other financial assistance directories are available in the Reference Collection of the Main Library.  Past editions are often available in the circulating collection along with other materials on writing grants.

To locate materials on grants and foundations, check the Library online catalog, iBistro, using these Subject searches: Endowments Directories", "Proposal Writing for Grants", "Grants in Aid", and "Research Grants Directories".

On the Web:

The Foundation Center in New York is a national organization that provides education and training about grant seeking, philanthropy, and foundations in the United States.  The web site complements the Center’s extensive collection of print and online directories that are available here at the Santa Monica Public Library. 

The Foundation Center’s “Getting Started for Individual Grantseekers” page includes advice and topical resource lists for individual grantseekers.  This is a good place for individuals to get oriented to the world of philanthropy.  The “Guide to Fiscal Sponsorship” provides a detailed look at the possibilities for individual grantseekers to affiliate with an organization or obtain a fiscal sponsor. 

Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance “a guide to grants offered by every department of the federal government available to State and local governments (including the District of Columbia); federally -recognized Indian tribal governments; Territories (and possessions) of the United States; domestic public, quasi-public, and private profit and nonprofit organizations and institutions; specialized groups; and individuals. After you find the program you want, contact the office that administers the program and find out how to apply.”  The print directory is also available at the Reference Desk in the Main Library.

  • Grants Register is a comprehensive survey of awards intended for students at or above the postgraduate level, or for those who require further professional or advanced professional training.

Fellowships, Scholarships & Financial Aid:

FinAid, the Smart Student Guide to Financial Aid: Includes a free searchable guide to student financial aid and scholarships, financial aid calculators, and links to financial aid forms.

FAFSA Free Application for Student Aid.  Financial aid for students planning post-secondary education.  Site includes FAFSA forms and information about important deadlines.

U.S. Department of Education Financial Aid site: The starting point for information on federal student financial assistance, with annotated lists of resources. Includes information on preparing for higher education, choosing a school, applying for admission, types of funding, and repaying loans.  Federal Student Aid, part of the Department of Education site, concentrates on planning, selecting, and applying for financial aid.

Library Resources:

  • Directory of Financial Aids for Women gives information about the special resources set aside for women.  Information is provided for scholarships, fellowships, loans, grants, awards, prizes, internships, and financial assistance to special population groups.

  • Financial Aid for… describes funding opportunities for specific ethnic groups.  There are volumes for African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans, and Native Americans.

  • Foundation Grants to Individuals features over 6,000 entries with current information for individual grantseekers.  The directory also includes an extensive bibliography of funding sources for individuals.

  • Grants Register is a comprehensive survey of awards intended for students at or above the postgraduate level, or for those who require further professional or advanced professional training.

  • Scholarships, fellowships, and loans provides access to over 6,000 sources of education-related financial aid for students and professionals at all levels of study from undergraduate to and vocational/technical to post doctorate and professional study.

Subject terms include "Scholarships—Directories", "Student Aid—Directories", and "Associations, Institutions, etc. Charitable Contributions—Directories."

Small Business Loans:

On the Web:

Small Business Administration (SBA)  Full service information on government loan and assistance programs, financing tutorials, and more.  From the SBA “Most Frequently Requested” page: “Please Note that the U.S. Small Business Administration does not offer grants to start or expand small businesses, though it does offer a wide variety of loan programs. While the SBA does offer some grant programs, these are generally designed to expand and enhance organizations that provide small business management, technical, or financial assistance. These grants generally support non-profit organizations, intermediary lending institutions, and state and local governments.”

SBDC – Small Business Development Center – Santa Monica College  This program of the Small Business Administration offers group workshops on writing business plans, starting a small business, SBA Loans and business law.

If you are need of personal financial assistance such as Social Security/Supplemental Security Income, Medicaid or State Social Services, you can find help here. GovBenefits.gov is a partnership of government organizations working together to provide a portal offering confidential, free, online benefit information that helps citizens determine their potential eligibility.
