Foundation &
Government Grants
“As an affiliate of the
Foundation Center,
the Santa Monica Public Library maintains a core
collection of directories of grants and foundations
and provides access to Foundation Grants to Individuals Online,
the Foundation Center electronic grantseekers’
database. Foundation Grants to Individuals Online is available
only in the Main Library and librarians are happy to
assist clients with its use.
Current editions of the grants,
foundations and other financial assistance
directories are available in the Reference
Collection of the Main Library. Past editions are
often available in the circulating collection along
with other materials on writing grants.

Foundation Center
in New York is a national organization that provides
education and training about grant seeking,
philanthropy, and foundations in the United States.
The web site complements the Center’s extensive
collection of print and online directories that are
available here at the Santa Monica Public Library.
The Foundation Center’s
“Getting Started for Individual Grantseekers” page includes
advice and topical resource lists for individual
grantseekers. This is a good place for
individuals to get oriented to the world of
philanthropy. The
“Guide to Fiscal
Sponsorship”
provides a detailed look at the possibilities for
individual grantseekers to affiliate with an
organization or obtain a fiscal sponsor.

concentrates on planning, selecting, and applying
for financial aid.

Administration does not offer grants to start or
expand small businesses, though it does offer a wide
variety of loan programs. While the SBA does offer
some grant programs, these are generally designed to
