“As an affiliate of the
Foundation Center,
the Santa Monica Public Library maintains a core
collection of directories of grants and foundations
and provides access to Foundation Directory
Online Professional, the Foundation
Center electronic grantseekers’ database.
Foundation Directory Online Professional
is available only in the Main Library and librarians
are happy to assist clients with its use.
Current editions of the grants
and foundations directories are available in the
Reference Collection of the Main Library. Past
editions are often available in the circulating
collection along with other materials on writing
grants and nonprofit management.

Assistance

federal government. The print directory is also
available at the Reference Desk in the Main Library.
Foundation Center Website
The Foundation Center in New York is a national
organization that provides education and training
about grant seeking, philanthropy, and foundations
in the United States. The web site complements the
Center’s extensive collection of print and online
directories. It’s a good place for nonprofits to
get oriented to or learn more about the world of
philanthropy. The site provides advice to grant
seekers, listings of workshops and classes including
training online, and topical resource lists for
further information. It includes a directory with
contact information only of foundations searchable
by foundation name. It also includes recent IRS 990
& 990-PF reports searchable by foundation name.
Federal Register
Browse or search listings of federal grant
opportunities.
Grants.gov
Find and apply online for federal government
grants. Includes over 1,000 programs offered by all
26 federal grant making agencies.
Grants.gov is
managed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human
Services.
GrantSmart
The site provides recent tax returns of non-profit
organizations. The database currently contains more
than 600,000 tax returns filed by over 105,000
private foundations and charitable trusts.
GrantsWeb
Extensive links to resources on public and private
funding from the Society of Research Administrators.

Provides information and training about grant

Find detailed, easy to understand reports on over
3400 charities that analyze fundraising, program and
administration expenses. Also find ratings and
comparisons with like organizations.
GuideStar
Searchable database of U.S. nonprofit
organizations. Listings include information on
background, mission, goals, and finances. Some
listings provide copies of their annual IRS Form
990.
Give.org
Sponsored by the Better Business Bureau. Find
background and financial information on dozens of
"nationally soliciting charitable organizations."
California Charitable Trusts
From the California Attorney General, this site
contains information on more than 85,000 registered
charities in California. Many listings provide
copies of their annual IRS Form 990.

Council on Foundations (COF)
is a membership organization of more than 2,000 grantmaking foundations and giving programs

Funding Information Center (FIC)
is an affiliate of the Foundation Center. The FIC
is a free, self-service library of research
materials on grants, fundraising, and nonprofit
management.
Grantsmanship Center
is a Los Angeles based organization whose purpose is
to offer training in grant seeking and to provide
low-cost publications to nonprofit organizations and
government agencies. The Grantsmanship Training
Program covers all aspects of researching grant
