Note: This page lists resources that are applicable to nonprofit organizations seeking grants. 

Foundation & Government Grants

“As an affiliate of the Foundation Center, the Santa Monica Public Library maintains a core collection of directories of grants and foundations and provides access to Foundation Directory Online Professional, the Foundation Center electronic grantseekers’ database.  Foundation Directory Online Professional is available only in the Main Library and librarians are happy to assist clients with its use. 

Current editions of the grants and foundations directories are available in the Reference Collection of the Main Library.  Past editions are often available in the circulating collection along with other materials on writing grants and nonprofit management. 

To locate materials on grants and foundations, check the Library online catalog, iBistro, using these Subject searches: “Endowments Directories,” “Proposal Writing for Grants,” “Grants in Aid,” “Research Grants Directories,” and “Nonprofit Organizations – Management—Handbooks, Manuals, etc.”      

On the Web:

California Community Foundation  exists to strengthen Los Angeles communities through effective philanthropy and civic engagement.

Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance  a guide to grants offered by every department of the federal government.  The print directory is also available at the Reference Desk in the Main Library.

Foundation Center Website  The Foundation Center in New York is a national organization that provides education and training about grant seeking, philanthropy, and foundations in the United States.  The web site complements the Center’s extensive collection of print and online directories.  It’s a good place for nonprofits to get oriented to or learn more about the world of philanthropy.  The site provides advice to grant seekers, listings of workshops and classes including training online, and topical resource lists for further information.  It includes a directory with contact information only of foundations searchable by foundation name.  It also includes recent IRS 990 & 990-PF reports searchable by foundation name.

Federal Register  Browse or search listings of federal grant opportunities. 

Grants.gov  Find and apply online for federal government grants. Includes over 1,000 programs offered by all 26 federal grant making agencies.  Grants.gov is managed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

GrantSmart  The site provides recent tax returns of non-profit organizations.  The database currently contains more than 600,000 tax returns filed by over 105,000 private foundations and charitable trusts.

GrantsWeb  Extensive links to resources on public and private funding from the Society of Research Administrators.

RFP’s on Philanthropy News Digest  A service of the Foundation Center, lists current requests for proposals.

SchoolGrants  Provides information and training about grant opportunities, grant writing, and sample grant proposals, for those seeking elementary and secondary school grants.

Charity Navigator  Helps potential donors make intelligent giving decisions by providing independent evaluations of the financial health of the largest US charities.  Find detailed, easy to understand reports on over 3400 charities that analyze fundraising, program and administration expenses.  Also find ratings and comparisons with like organizations. 

GuideStar  Searchable database of U.S. nonprofit organizations.  Listings include information on background, mission, goals, and finances.  Some listings provide copies of their annual IRS Form 990.

Give.org  Sponsored by the Better Business Bureau.  Find background and financial information on dozens of "nationally soliciting charitable organizations."

California Charitable Trusts  From the California Attorney General, this site contains information on more than 85,000 registered charities in California.  Many listings provide copies of their annual IRS Form 990.

Tax Exempt Organizations List IRS Publication 78  Cumulative List of Organizations described in Section 170(c) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986. Provides only name of organization, city, state and country.

Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP)  an individual member association, advances philanthropy through education, training and advocacy based on research and a Code of Ethical Principles and Standards of Professional Practice.

California Secretary of State Miscellaneous Filings – Unincorporated Nonprofit Associations  This page of the  California Business Portal provides information and links to forms for Incorporating your nonprofit in the State of California.

Center for Nonprofit Management  Located in downtown Los Angeles, the Center fosters healthy neighborhoods and communities by improving the performance of nonprofit organizations addressing critical issues and serving underserved populations.  The Center offers classes in various topics related to nonprofit management and grants.  The Center’s Nonprofit Resource Library has an extensive collection of resources for nonprofit management, philanthropy, sector information, career planning, and funding research.

Council on Foundations (COF) is a membership organization of more than 2,000 grantmaking foundations and giving programs worldwide. The Council provides leadership expertise, legal information and networking opportunities to their members and to the general public.

Funding Information Center (FIC) is an affiliate of the Foundation Center.  The FIC is a free, self-service library of research materials on grants, fundraising, and nonprofit management.

Grantsmanship Center is a Los Angeles based organization whose purpose is to offer training in grant seeking and to provide low-cost publications to nonprofit organizations and government agencies.  The Grantsmanship Training Program covers all aspects of researching grant opportunities, writing grant proposals and negotiating with funding sources.

The Independent Sector is the leadership forum for charities, foundations, and corporate giving programs committed to advancing the common good in America and around the world.

Philanthropy News Network Online (PNN)  PNNOnline delivers news, information, and resources to all segments of the nonprofit world in order to help them better achieve their goals.

Santa Monica College (SMC) Continuing & Community Education – “Professional and Career Development” Course Series offers online classes for grant writing, becoming a grant consultant, and marketing your nonprofit.   

Techsoup the technology place for nonprofits.  The “Techsoup Stock” page lists donated and discounted technology products for nonprofit organizations and public libraries.

UCLA Extension Certificate Program in Fund Raising  Endorsed by the Greater L.A. Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals.
