The City of Santa Monica promotes active lifestyles by focusing on programs that encourage walking, biking, and the use of other resources to create a healthy life.  The Library supports active lifestyles  by providing information and materials that assist people in achieving their health and fitness goals.
Consumer Health Complete
Library online database.  Locate articles using Subject and Keyword searches for "Walking, "Exercise,"  or "Aerobics" and find evaluations of equipment by searching topics like "Walking Shoes" or "Exercise Equipment."  Of special interest are the Fact Sheets & Pamphlets on a variety of healthy lifestyle topics.
Santa Monica Community & Cultural Services Programs
Get fit and stay active by taking advantage of the many community programs offered.  For all ages, these programs feature sports, dancing, exercise, and specialty programs.  No matter your age or physical condition you'll find a program to help you get healthy and stay healthy.
Santa Monica Bikeways Map
The Bicycle Master Plan provides a wide variety programs for commuter and recreational bicyclists in Santa Monica by creating a network of local and regional bikeways.  The City provides a continuous and coordinated network of bikeways to provide access to businesses, schools, parks, beaches, and points outside of the City. Additional information is available on the City Hall On Call Website under the heading Parks & Recreation Bike Trails.

If you prefer skating, check out the possibilities on Santa Monica Beach. And don't forget that there are plenty places for kids to play and well as jogging and volleyball on the beach.
Encourage young people to develop healthy lifestyles using City programs.  PAL, the Police Activity League, offers free educational, cultural, and athletic activities for boys and girls ages six to seventeen who live or go to school in Santa Monica.  Playground Partnership, a collaborative effort of Santa Monica and the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District, allows school-aged youth, their friends and families unsupervised use of school playgrounds for recreation during non-school and non-CREST hours. Playgrounds offer fields, equipment, exercise paths, basketball courts, handball courts and restrooms. CREST, Child Care, Recreation, Enrichment and Sports, is a before and after school program for children in kindergarten through 5th grade that provides a rich array of flexible program options for students and families.
 
The National Institutes for Health provide excellent information to help you achieve a healthy lifestyle.  Topics like Exercise for Children, Exercise for Seniors, and Exercise & Physical Fitness have advice and information for all ages and levels.  In addition, these NIH Websites provide links to resources and other related Websites of interest to anyone who is concerned about health. Santa Monica's Environmental Programs Division provides a list of Santa Monica parks, ideal places for recreation.  The list also names national and state parks in this area.  Our health and fitness is closely related to our environment so visit Environmental Programs Environmental Education page for ways to incorporate environmental study into your health and fitness regimen.
Santa Monica Farmers Market provides customers year-round with a selection of fresh, seasonal produce to encourage healthy eating choices.  For additional information about healthy eating trythe HealthyEating Website.  It provided food guides, meal planning, nutrition guidelines, eating advice from kids to seniors, and much more.
 
Use the Library online catalog, iBistro, to locate additional information about healthy lifestyles.  Subject searches such as " Women Nutrition," " Men Nutrition," " Children Nutrition," " Stretching Exercises," or " Fitness Walking" will retrieve information on that subject.  The Library also has a wide selection of health and fitness magazines.  Use subject searches such as " Fitness Periodicals," " Physical Fitness for Women," or " Health Periodicals" to locate the titles.
Active Living By Design
University of North Carolina Chapel Hill   created this site “to increase physical activity through community design, public policies and communications strategies.” On the site’s homepage, visitors can browse through sections that include information on “Active Living Essentials”, “Active Living Programs”, and “Active Living Resources”.  A great place to find links between physical activity, urban design, and health.
