Histories also exist on more focused topics, like Fred Basten's An Illustrated Guide to the Legendary Trees of Santa Monica Bay and Jeffrey Stanton's Santa Monica Pier: a History from 1875 to 1990.

George T. Hastings wrote a definitive study entitled Trees of Santa Monica, Described and Located by Streets in 1941. A second edition of this work was issued in 1956 and it was revised and rewritten by local tree expert and environmentalist Grace Heintz in 1976. Another edition of the Heintz work was published in 1981.

City Departments
often contribute histories of their own. The Fire Department is represented by
Santa Monica Fire Department (J.H. Tigner, 1902) A History of the Santa Monica Fire Department, 1889-1989 by Kevin M. Archer, and Santa Monica Firefighters' Centennial Cookbook 1889-1989.

The Police Department combined cookery and restaurant history in The Santa Monica Police Department Centennial Cookbook 1896-1996: a Collection of Arresting Recipes from Santa Monica Restaurants, Past and Present, and Santa Monica Police Department Staff. The municipal bus line is represented by History of Santa Monica's Big Blue Bus researched and written by Bob Ayer. The Friends of the Santa Monica Public Library published The Santa Monica Public Library, 1890-1990 by Ellen Braby and Janet Hunt in 1990 for its centennial.

Local institutions, such as churches, schools, and hospitals, are part of Santa Monica history. Centennial History: First United Methodist Church, Santa Monica (Jerry Brown); Saint Monica's Catholic Church, 1886-1986 (St. Monica's Church); First Presbyterian Church, Santa Monica, California: the First Hundred Years Centennial 1875-1975 (Carolyn C. Reynolds); A History of Industrial Education in the Santa Monica City Schools from 1875 to 1985 (Joseph S. Manning); A History of the Santa Monica City Schools, 1876-1951 (Donald Cleland); Public School Register of the Town of Santa Monica District, County of Los Angeles 1892-1893, and Saint John's and Its People by Sister Julia Gilmore represent part of the City's history. The Library also maintains a file of the Nautilus, the Santa Monica High School yearbook.

Videocassettes bring the Bay area's past and present to life.

Carnations, Ostriches & Condos: the Hidden History of Ocean Park (produced and directed by Beverly L. Jones and Anthea Raymond) relates the history of the Ocean Park section of Santa Monica, including discussion of the local pier, artists, residents, and Pacific Ocean Park.

Santa Monica Story: Episode of the Rex dramatizes the era when gambling ships were anchored offshore in Santa Monica Bay during the 1930s.

The severe storm damage to the Santa Monica Pier on January 28, 1983, was recorded the day after the storm in an amateur video and an NBC tape. These tapes, plus the footage of the official pier opening celebrations in April 1990, make up Santa Monica Pier from Destruction to Restoration, a two video documentary.

Rent control is an important part of Santa Monica past and present. Professor Christopher Salter of the UCLA Department of Geography hosted an analysis of Santa Monica's two and a half year struggle over rent control and the five city elections that together established rent control policy in Santa Monica, a City at War.
