Money market funds are invested in short-term securities that provide income to
investors. Typically the funds are invested in U.S. Treasury obligations (e.g. Treasury
bills) or commercial paper (e.g. corporate obligations). Money market funds are popular
because the principal invested is extremely safe. Most money market funds allow the
investor to write checks on his/her account.
