There are many news sources available on the Web and in the
Library. The following Web resources represent but a few of the many good
sources freely available to researchers.
On the Web (general business):

Weekly publication that
covers all aspects of the advertising business.
Barron's Online
General
business and financial news; Barron's Weekly counterpart.
Business Week
Lacks the depth of the print
version but good for general business news.

Recent news of major U.S.
corporations. General access is free, but you must register.
Business.com
Business search engine with a wide variety of links chosen by research analysts.
Career Magazine
Job openings, resume bank,
articles, relocation resources, etc. Search for jobs by industry, or use
the "Quick Job Search" tool.

oriented links page with links to business newspapers, magazines, business academic publications, and more.

newspaper. Some content is free but much of it requires paid

Investor's Business Daily Comprehensive coverage of business, financial, and national news. Registration

version of the popular magazine with the same features and information;
the finance section of the popular CNN news website.

In the Library:
The newspapers and journals listed below are available in print form in the Main Library. Some of the journals may be
checked out of the Library to read at home or office. All may be used
for free. While journals and newspapers online are excellent for current news and quick overviews,
they often do not offer the depth of their print counterparts. Sometimes only lead stories
and columns are offered in the Web versions and sometimes only summaries of articles are
available without paying for a subscription to the Web product. It is also true that many
people prefer to read longer articles in print form.
General business publications:

Barron's, Business Week, Forbes and Fortune are among the best known business magazines. They have similar coverage,
focusing on news of business, finance, and industry. Fortune has longer
articles that emphasize general concepts and issues. The Wall Street Journal
is the premiere business newspaper, but the Los Angeles Times and New
York Times also provide excellent business coverage, especially for their
localities.
Publications that focus on Finance:
- Money
Includes articles on stocks and mutual fund tips.
- Kiplinger's Personal Finance
Financial advice on a wide range of topics; business forecasts.
- Forbes
Articles on successful companies and individuals, industries, marketing,
law, taxes, technology, computers, communications, investments, management
performance and global business trends.
- Fortune
Columns include features on the marketplace, tech movers and shakers,
career trends, U.S. politics, and even European business. Look for their
annual lists ranging on topics from "40 richest under 40" to the benchmark
"Fortune 500."
- Investor's Business Daily
Provides both concise and
comprehensive coverage of business, financial, economic, and national news.
Much of the paper's expertise comes from its sister company, William O’Neil
& Company, a firm that provides research services to mutual funds,
investment counselors, banks, and insurance companies.
- Value Line Investment Survey
Available at the Library in
both the standard and the expanded edition. It briefly but comprehensively
summarizes an array of stocks based on their characteristics. Value Line has the reputation for recommending profitable
stocks and publishes priceearnings ratios based analysts' estimates of future
earnings to serve as an investor's guide to selecting stocks that may be presently
undervalued.
- Standard & Poor's Credit Week
Provides ratings, trends, and outlook for fixed income securities. It also reports on
issuers who have a change in credit quality.
- Standard & Poor's Outlook
Analyzes business
and stock market trends and contains brief data on individual securities and buy/sell
recommendations. It includes current S & P stock market indexes.
- Wall Street Journal
Nation's foremost investment daily.
Use the Library's
online catalog to locate these and other financial periodicals.
Suggested subject headings include: Investments and Periodicals;
Securities and Periodicals; Portfolio Management and Periodicals; Personal
Finance and Periodicals.
Local business publications:
- Los Angeles Business Journal
Journal of industry, news, finance, and business trends covering the Los
Angeles metropolitan area.
- Los Angeles Times
Reports on local, national, and international business news in the
Business section.
Small Business & Special Market publications:
- Black Enterprise
A monthly business magazine aimed at
African-American professionals and entrepreneurs; provides information on
personal finance, investment strategies, and entrepreneurship.
- Entrepreneur
Articles, interviews, business profiles, financing, marketing,
advertising and legislative news of note aimed at the small business owner
or those planning to start a new or additional business.
- Hispanic Business
Articles and news for and about Hispanic business in
the United States.

All are especially helpful to small
business and niche marketing, although they are national in coverage and publish

To locate journals on a specific business or
industry, consult Business Organizations, Agencies, and Publications
Directory, Ulrich's International Periodicals Directory, or Standard
Rate & Data's Business Publications volume. To search the
online catalog, use a subject search
for the name of the industry plus the term "periodicals." For example,
"advertising periodicals" or "banking periodicals."

A large periodicals database featuring the full text and citations for a
wide range of newspaper and magazine titles including many business
publications; indexes over a thousand periodicals from 1980
to the present.
- Business and Company
Resource Center
A comprehensive research tool that meets the
business research needs of the businessperson, student, job seeker, or
casual investor. It offers dynamic, accurate, and up-to-date company and
industry intelligence on thousands of global companies.
- Newsbank
Consists of two databases: America’s Newspapers, which
indexes the full text of the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune,
Christian Science Monitor, Orange County Register, San Diego
Union-Tribune, USA Today, the Washington Post, and the San Francisco
Chronicle from roughly 1985 to the present; and Noticias en
Español, which provides full text articles in Spanish. Search
for full text newspaper articles on business in both databases.
